This is the ICT Training for teachers in Gunungkidul Regency. It took place on 12th to 24th of January in SMKN 2 Wonosari. The purpose of the training was that teachers were expected to have ability to train women in Gunungkidul as human resources to be independent, creative and inovative women in using technology especially Internet. Yah… it’s a kind of program that has aim to empower women to be selffullfilment.

The Analysis of Meaning

In communication, we find different kind of styles or ways in expressing feeling or ideas. The language used in expressing ideas depends on the situation or the location where the conversation takes place. Similarly, in written text, we also often find the language styles in describing the story or expressing the writer’s opinions as in oral communication. In understanding the written text, as a translator, we have to know or recognize the meaning and then transferring into the target text (TT). Here, we concern with the analysis of linguistics meaning, especially in sematic field, we know it as the study of meaning.

In fact there are two kinds of linguistics meaning. Those are referential meaning or denotativmeaning and connotative meaning. To deal with the meaning, whether it is denotative meaning and connotative meaning, the mening of the text comprises many aspects: referential content, emotional coloring, cultural association, social and personal connotation and so on. Those aspect are of course something that translator must never forget.

In translating a written text, we do not translate the Source Text (ST) into Target Text (TT) using literal translation. If in the ST, a word or sentence that has connotative meaning, we can not translate word for word because the meaning will be rediculous. We have to find the equivalent for that word or sentencein the TT. For instance, in Indonesian we have expression” mukanya merah”, in the TT, we can not translate it into “red face” because “mukanya merah” has connotative meaning, so we translate it into another expression such as ” he is shy” or ” he is angry”, the choice of the expression here also depends on the context.

Connotative is also often used for expressing the ideas in the story, for example the writer uses figurative language in presenting his ideas or opinion about something. ” Dia tersenyum dengan manis” , the word manis in this context does not mean ” taste sweet” but it refers to “smile beautifully”. The connotative meaning also has function to express writer/speaker’s feeling with emotion to the addressee. Features of linguitics politeness, flattering, rudeness or insult are the examples of the use of figurative language. If the speaker meant to be more polite, she will say ” Sir, I want to wash my hands” rather than ” I want to go to toilet”.

Indonesian synonyms ” istri” and “bini” that have meaning “wife” in English, actually they have different overall meaning. This is because “istri’ is a neutral expression, and “bini” is disrespectful expression for “wife”. This kind of examples show that the translators have to know know how to analyze the meaning and understand about cultural setting of SL?ST so they can find the appropriate Target Language equivalent. One thing that the translator must know about analyzing the meaning is denotative meaning or referential meaning is used in scientific text or subject, but connotative meaning or figurating language can be used in our daily conversation or fiction (in written).

Text Register in Translation

When we communicate with other people, we use a language as a mean to express our feeling and ideas. But the use of language here is different between one and another. Everybody has their own style in expressing their languages in order to communicate with someone else. The differences are because of age, sex, status, state, size personality emotional state and so on. Beyond the individual differences, there is a characteristic about the way people speak in different regions and social group, we usually call it as dialect. Not only in verbal/oral communication, we deal with it, but also in translation.

In translating a text, we face the two dimensions of language. The first dimension is about the user of the language here, as a translator we have to consider about the setting where the writer lives ( the region), who is the writer (social class of the writer) and other aspects that reflect the use of the language in the source text. For example in Indonesian literature, the letters of R.A Kartini translated into Dutch then made in a book by Multatuli. Now the book is known and become a historical book titled” Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang”. When Multatuli translated her letters, of course Multatuli knew well about Kartini’s life . Multatuli knew about her life background, social status and language used by R.A Kartini in her daily life.

The second dimension of variation in using language is about the use of language itself. Here we deal with the register. It is a kind of style that is used by the speaker or the writer towards the hearers or readers of the subject matter. The writer uses the language for certain purposes of communication. So, the writer will use a variety of language determined by the subject matter. A lawyer and a journalist will use different language in their job fields. They use a particular register in their words. In addressing the jugde in a court, a lawyer will say “Your Honour” or “Yang Mulia” but a journalist will write or address” The Judge” or ” Bapak Hakim” .

Register is also access the situation the conversation or objective of the text. In another word, register mediates between language and situation. This is about the choice of using language in formal or informal way. In society, we have to know when we should use formal or informal language. When we attend a tribunal, a seminar or a ceremony of course we use formal language and sometimes we use different register, but when we communicate with our friends we use informal language or even we see on TV that people use informal language for entertainment. For example, Negeri Impian Show, it is formatted as a kind of debate of the country’s candidates but using informal language and jokes. Another fact that shows we always deal with the use language is the purpose of the language itself. For example in persuading someone in speech and in advertisment using different language and style. In speech we often use the word ” we should….” to persuade someone else to make them agree with our ideas. But in advertisment we use a simple language and the language or the word must attract the audience and make them buy the product. As shown on TV, Sprite ads just give slogan” Kutahu yang kumahu” seems very simple but has implicit meaning and persuading us to drink that kind of soft drink. But of course the visualization of the ads support the word/ slogan become more effective in persuading the consumers.

My Expectation

It is undeniable that the we live in globalization era and realizing to that case, we as English teachers should know about all related to that. In my opinion, having this kind of activities in Seamolec will enrich my knowledge and hopefully i can implement all I have got and can explore it more and more. It is my simple plan after finishing this tranning in Seamolec, of course i will share all about how to make email address, mailing list, design blog and also how to use and implement them in teaching learning process. All of them are useful for teachers and also for students in conducting teaching learning process. Teaching is no longer in classroom anymore, because the students can access the materials wherever they are. The learning is more exciting and fun for both teachers and students. Besides, they can learn independently they will easily improve their knowledge and we also can easily knowing their progress.

One thing that I should prepare after finishing this traning is that challengings tasks are waiting for me. I have to prepare my students to collaborate in learning English using email as the media of interaction with students from another school ( SMKN 1 Cibinong). Hope they will enjoy emailing each other and do collaboration to make good progress.

Pak Khalid in action

Today is the 2nd day I attend the course how to access Internet with Seamolec that can be used as the media for teaching English. The agenda shows that the participants have to make Webblog. Wow….it’s a quite new and interesting for me. I’m sure that some of the participants also feel excited. Yah…… of course some of them also have difficulties in following the instruction from Pak Khalid. It sounds funny that we sometimes feel confused about the steps in making and designing blog. Even some of them forget their email id and password……….. how come!!!!! Sorry Pak Khalid, hope you are still there waiting for us…

It’s embarassing indeed that we as teachers in this era have so limited knowledge about the technology, but this is the fact! I realized that we can not force all the teachers to know more about the technology, but in other side we also have to be creative and so on. Honestly, some of the teachers do not want to be called as guru gaptek. Do you agree about that?

That’s why we are here in Seameo Seamolec now for having such kind of cyber activities that can be used as teaching activities in our schools. Well, so far I enjoy having all here. We do something new with new friends and new instructors. Having good facilities, good friends, good environment and also some experts who always guide us to do all the activities make all the participants feel excited. Yah…..It’s Fun here. Of course not only such a kind of fun we got here, but we have to implement all we got here in our schools. Hopefully, after sharing each other about teaching learning with new friend teachers we also are able to conduct teaching learning using Internet (email, blog and other software) we have learnt from Seamolec.
